Weather Synopsis

An upper-level trough is ushering in much colder temperatures and widespread light snow this afternoon. The disturbance is moving from north to south across the region with a weak surface low parked off the mouth of the Columbia River, helping to provide some additional lift and moisture for the southern Washington Cascades and Mt Hood. Areas along the east slopes of the Cascades, specifically near and south of Lake Chelan and on both sides of the Cascades south of Stevens Pass should continue to pick up light snowfall through the evening, with light snow lingering longest for the Mt Hood area overnight. Even though this system doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with, cold temperatures will help squeeze a few inches of fluffy low density snow.

Besides light snowfall, the other big story will be moderate to strong E-NE winds in most areas through Sunday morning. As the trough pulls away and digs further south along the west coast, winds will be slow to taper off generally from north to south across the forecast area during the day Sunday. In the wake of this system, very dry air will move over the area and we can expect a cold and sunny day.  Widespread single-digit low temperatures in the mountains are likely and highs will struggle in the teens on Sunday.

Clear and cold conditions will persist on Sunday night.  On Monday, a ridge offshore will begin to break down and while we'll remain dry, some high clouds may move over the northern half of the forecast area. Temperatures and freezing levels will inch up a notch on Monday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

We'll see the ridge break down midweek with light precipitation generally brushing the Olympics and most of the Washington Cascades while largely leaving the Mt Hood area dry.  Forecast models are out of sync about the midweek pattern so we'll have to wait for clarity regarding timing.  Temperatures will slowly moderate through midweek.

Previous forecast from Jan 27, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
