Weather Synopsis

Update: Fixed Timberline precipitation typo for tonight

Early this afternoon, relatively quiet weather is over the region with leftover clouds and scattered showers found along the west slopes of the Cascades from about I-90 and south to Mt Hood and a mix of sun and clouds elsewhere. Our region sits between strong upper level ridging offshore (around 140W) and long wave troughing that encompasses much of the continental US and Canada.  An upper level trough will slide down the backside of the upper level trough tonight and pass through our region on Saturday. This system will be relatively moisture-starved but it will accomplish 2 things; 1.) it will drop a few inches of low density snow in most areas and 2.) it will usher in much colder air into the region.

As the trough drops south over the area during the day, a weak surface low will set up off the WA/OR border and help to bring additional lift and a little bit of Pacific moisture into the equation.  As winds turn more northerly and eventually easterly by the afternoon, we'll also get the added bonus of some upslope snow favoring the east slopes of the Cascades, especially for the terrain near and south of Hwy 2.  Expect light snow to develop during the day from about Stevens Pass and southward to Mt Hood with a few inches of snow expected through Saturday evening. Drier conditions will prevail further north. Temperatures will begin to drop during the day for most areas as cold arctic air from the interior spreads southward. Moderate ENE winds will begin to pick up Saturday afternoon as well.

Showers should diminish Saturday night as the trough digs further down the coast.  Moderate to locally strong ENE winds will continue overnight. Snow showers will continue longest in the Mt Hood area. We are in for a dry and cold Sunday with brisk E-NE winds generally diminishing during the day.

Previous forecast from Jan 27, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
