Weather Synopsis

A developing low pressure system and warm front passed over the area last night, with milder air pushing further north and east than originally forecasted. While this won't change the type of precipitation in the mountains (except for Mt Hood), this is an all snow event, we have seen temperatures near and west of the Cascade rise into the 20s in many locations. This relatively milder air will stick around until a strong cold front comes crashing down this afternoon. Cold air remains entrenched along the east slopes of the Cascades, an only a very subtle warming trend is expected north of Hwy 2 and east of Washington Pass. Precipitation numbers remain largely on track, although they have been nudged up for several locations this morning.

Snow will continue today, with snowfall rates peaking for the northern Cascades this morning, the central/southern WA Cascades this afternoon, and the Mt Hood area late this afternoon through early evening. The aforementioned warming trend will bring a modest rise in snow levels from about Snoqualmie Pass and the south Washington Cascades, with the peak warmth towards the early evening for the Mt. Hood area. Snowfall totals of 1.5-2.5' seem likely across the area.

Strong westerly winds will pummel the central/south WA Cascades and Mt Hood today, with extreme winds expected in the alpine. Low-level easterly flow in the Passes will eventually be reversed early Tuesday afternoon.

As the front slides through Tuesday evening, the focus of the rain/snow will shift to Mt Hood.  A weak Puget Sound Convergence zone should add a few more inches between Stevens and Snoqualmie, but showers will become lighter and more scattered after midnight.

Arctic air will resettle on both sides of the Cascades on Wednesday as we dry out. Expect low clouds near and east of the Cascade crest with perhaps a few flurries. We'll wait until Wednesday night for east winds to ramp up through the Passes.

Previous forecast from Dec 19, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
