Weather Synopsis

Precipitation out ahead of a developing warm front has already transitioned the mountains from scattered showers to steady light snow in many areas this afternoon. This trend will continue overnight as a low pressure system deepens and tracks toward our region.  This system will move fast in westerly zonal flow but punch a significant punch. Heavier snowfall will develop for the northern and central Cascades in the morning, and shift south in the afternoon as a cold front sweeps through around mid-day or early afternoon.

As this system slams into arctic air entrenched along the Washington Cascades, we can squeeze out more low density snowfall than our usual storms.  Storm totals will likely be 1 to 2.5 ft range for most areas through Tuesday afternoon. Some warming will occur down near Mt Hood, and to a lesser extent for the southern Washington Cascades mid-day through early Tuesday afternoon.

Subtle storm track variations are likely to nudge the higher storm totals north or south as the event occurs. Strong to extreme W-SW winds will develop to the south of the low pressure system. Look for winds to increase during the day on Tuesday.

Showers and a possible PSCZ will add a few more fluffy inches Tuesday night.  A ridge will build offshore on Wednesday and bring our region a drying trend. Very cold air will once again settle over the area with mountain temperatures generally in the single digits.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The ridge will hold Wednesday night and begin to shift inland on Thursday.  A series of frontal systems will crash into the ridge, with light snow developing Thursday or Thursday night.  Very strong offshore flow will lead to strong east gradients cranking that cold air through the Passes Wednesday night through Thursday night. Another frontal system should arrive Friday. Eventually, milder air will work into the area late this week west of the crest and likely over the weekend for the Passes and east slopes of the Cascades.

Previous forecast from Dec 19, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
