A welcome pattern change has started across the Pacific Northwest as cooler air and cooler weather systems begin to impact the region.
Very light post-frontal convergence snow flurries in the central Washington Cascades Thursday will dissipate by Thursday evening as the low-level westerly flow dries out. Cool air continues to filter into northern and western Washington overnight, resulting in 5000 ft temperatures dropping into the teens and low 20s in many areas. Subtle ridging will produce a warming trend across the southern Cascades. The result will be a very large temperature contrast from north to south along the Cascades that persists into Friday. Low-level winds should shift easterly through the mountain gaps.
High clouds increase as a weak warm from moves in from the west on Friday. Temperatures continue to moderate within the system's warm sector Friday night, from the central Washington Cascades southward. Moisture north of the warm front brings some increasing light snow to the northern Cascades and Olympics late Friday evening into Friday night as a compact low approaches our near-shore waters.
Snow levels should drop as the low moves across northern Oregon early Saturday and a well-phased trough brings a push of strong westerly winds to the southern Cascades. Expect a period of moderate snow peaking Saturday morning with 3-6" possible during the day for most NWAC stations near and west of the Cascade Crest.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Post-frontal snow showers taper Saturday night with clearing and chilly temperatures continue to spill into the region. Sunday features chilly temperatures with freezing levels well below the passes in Washington State. High clouds should gradually increase as the next system starts approaching with mid-level clouds arriving by the afternoon.
With cold air in place, a potent low moving in from the WNW reaches the Washington near-shore waters by Monday morning. Light to moderate snowfall becomes heavy by Monday morning. Some areas could see upwards of a foot of lower-density snow before flow shifts northerly and snowfall eases rapidly Monday afternoon.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
