Weather Synopsis for Tuesday & Tuesday
Monday set record high temperatures throughout the Puget Sound region and with a very similar meteorological setup today with even stronger E flow, expect another slew of records to be broken on Tuesday.
The reasons for the records include: (1) a very strong high pressure drifting E across British Columbia and into Alberta this afternoon - air warms as it sinks under the high-pressure. (2) A surface high is associated with the upper-level feature and continues to drive a strong E flow through the mountain gaps. Air further warms as it accelerates through the mountain gaps into the Puget Sound region. Only sheltered valley locations have below-freezing temperatures on Tuesday morning as the combination of subsidence aloft and winds mixing the surface layer keep temperatures at a majority of NWAC stations above freezing overnight. The strong March sunshine will also help to mix out the shallow inversion layer that developed in these locations overnight.
Tuesday night and Wednesday the high drifts gradually ESE away from the region, but it will take some time for the easterly flow to weaken and the air mass to cool, so we expect one more day of record highs and moderate E flow to follow a warm night with mostly above-freezing temperatures.
