We're in the midst of a very active and impactful week of winter weather in the mountains through the forecast period.
Very light snow shower activity continues Tuesday night as onshore flow arrives over a weak ridge, adding very light amounts of fresh snow above 3000 ft going into Christmas day. Temperatures cool, keeping snow levels below the mountain passes. By the overnight hours, expect rapidly increasing high stratiform clouds to spread across the region, lowering and thickening across the Olympics as a very potent system approaches.
This system will ultimately deliver a long-duration heavy snowfall event. This is due to the arrival of an initial frontal system on Christmas Day, followed by reinforcement from a developing low tracking into southern British Columbia overnight. Moderate to heavy snowfall spreads first into the Olympics between 4 and 7 AM Wednesday, and then throughout the Cascades later in the morning. Precipitation intensifies through the afternoon along with S winds and low-level E flow. Snow levels should be around 2500 ft west of the Cascade Crest and 500-1000 ft lower for the mountain gaps and E slopes of the Cascades.
Snow levels rise overnight and peak early Thursday, with 3500-5000 ft snow levels. We're monitoring a period of very intense W winds associated with winds wrapping around the low-pressure center as it passes. Expect limited cooling behind the frontal passage early Thursday. This front will mark a shift from snow to rain at Snoqualmie Pass up to around 3500 ft. Post-frontal SW flow sustains moderate to heavy snowfall for the west slopes of the Cascades on Thursday with some spillover onto the E slopes.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Thursday night brings a relative reprieve with decreasing mostly light snow showers.
Models exhibit tremendous uncertainty regarding Friday's storm. It could be a very significant system as well, but details are hard to pin down.
Active winter weather continues Friday night through Saturday as yet another system moves through the region. Each system has snow levels close to or slightly above seasonal norms.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
