A weak front is pushing through the area this afternoon and re-invigorating shower activity across the region. As the front shifts to the east tonight, onshore flow will increase and we'll see a Puget Sound Convergence zone take aim at the central Cascades from near I-90 to Hwy2 along with moderate westerly ridgeline winds. Another area of heavier showers will occur near Mt Hood and the base of the upper level trough. The area of convergence will shift north on Tuesday morning, shifting the shower focus to the Mt Loop Hwy and the Mt Baker area. Showers will become more scattered in the afternoon, with cloudier skies and sunbreaks along the west slopes of the Cascades/Olympics and Mt Hood and sunnier conditions along the east slopes of the Cascades. Snowfall totals through mid-day Tuesday should average 2-6" with 4-10" more likely for Mt Hood and along the west slopes of the Cascades affected by the convergence zone.
The wet weather will keep chugging through the short term. A stronger Pacific frontal system will move in late Tuesday night. Warm frontal precipitation will spread inland early Wednesday morning and a cold front will pass through Wednesday afternoon. The front will deliver a modest shot of snow above 3000-4000', with higher totals likely for the volcanoes favored in southerly flow.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Showers will become more scattered Wednesday night and Thursday, except they'll be a bit heavier and more persistent for the Olympics since they sit closer to the trailing upper low. We'll see a similar diurnal trend as earlier in the week with snow levels starting out near 3000' and rising to 4000-5000' in the Thursday afternoon.
On Friday, we'll see the upper low pull away and dive south along the Oregon/California coast. However, an upper level trough extending SW from Alberta will keep an unstable air mass over Washington state and lead to scattered afternoon mountain showers. Drier and milder conditions are likely over the weekend as a ridge of high pressure attempts to build over the area.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
