Weather Synopsis

If you like warm sunny weather, you're in luck. Several weather stations this afternoon have already reached well mid-40s and even 50s. A high-pressure ridge parked off the coast will dominate our weather for the next several days. Expect generally clear skies, lots of sunshine, and temperatures well above freezing.

Friday night clear skies will allow for some cooling, particularly in the mountain valleys and passes. This could result in temperature inversions that feel quite chilly. Make no mistake, it's still warm higher up the mountain. With the main ridge axis offshore, easterly winds from about I-90 southward to Mt Hood will keep these areas slightly cooler than locations further north.

Even if it feels a bit cold at the trailhead first thing in the morning, it will heat up quickly. Temperatures will once again push into the 50s, with a few weather stations possibly tipping the 60F mark. Winds should gradually decrease across the region as the ridge moves overhead, allowing you to feel the full brunt of the heat.

With the high-pressure ridge camped out over the PNW, Saturday night and Sunday will feel like a rinse and repeat. Clear skies will allow lower elevation temperatures to dip while middle and upper elevations remain quite warm. Once the sun comes up, temperatures once again quickly rise. Freezing levels appear stuck between 10000 and 11000 feet, with most areas remaining well above freezing for the next several days.

Extended Weather Synopsis

We remain stuck in a persistent high-pressure ridge pattern well into next week. Temperatures and freezing levels will moderate slightly Monday and Tuesday as the ridge flattens slightly, but it won't be cold. With freezing levels well above our forecast elevations, sites will remain above freezing. Fortunately, the weather becomes relatively easy to predict. Expect generally clear skies, a few passing high thin clouds, warm temperatures, and light winds. This pattern could start to break down later in the week.

Previous forecast from Mar 15, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
