Weather Synopsis

Snow showers are starting to pop up over the mountains this afternoon, driven by daytime heating and a cool unstable air mass overhead. While most showers will be light, we may see locally more moderate showers near the southern volcanoes like Mt Rainier and Mt St Helens. Showers will dissipate overnight and skies will begin to clear in the evening. An upper low dropping south along our coastline will spread some mid and high-level clouds over the Olympics, south Washington Cascades and Mt Hood area later tonight. Clearer conditions will prevail further north.

On Monday, that low pressure system now off the northern Californian coast will deepen and spread increasing high clouds further north. We should see a high overcast in the Mt Hood area, and filtered sunshine for the south Washington Cascades transitioning to mostly skies for the central and especially northern Cascades. There's just enough instability in the north Cascades that we may see an isolated afternoon shower, otherwise we can expect a dry day. The other main story will be increasing E-SE winds over the region. The strongest winds will develop over the Mt Hood area and north to Snoqualmie Pass in the afternoon hours. Afternoon highs will be several degrees warmer on Monday than Sunday.

On Monday night and Tuesday, light to moderate precipitation from the same system will spread into Mt Hood first on Monday night, and eventually light precipitation in the south Washington Cascades during the day Tuesday. E-SE ridgeline winds will affect all areas during this period and may become extreme for areas like Mt. Hood, Crystal Mt, White Pass and Snoqualmie Pass. On Tuesday, while even the north Cascades should be breezy, they should see more sunshine and warmer temperatures than areas closer to the low and further south.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The same low pressure complex should start to pull further south on Wednesday, taking the clouds and showers with it. We should see mostly sunny skies in much of the area, with a slower clearing trend for Mt Hood and the far south Washington Cascades. Temperatures will warm several more degrees on Wednesday. On Thursday, we begin to see a pattern change with onshore flow developing and low-level marine clouds/moisture beginning to work it's way along the west slopes of the Cascades. It should be a benign weather day with slightly cooler conditions on the west-side than east slopes of the Cascades.

Previous forecast from Mar 26, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
