Weather Synopsis

Showers and the associated convective clouds have fired up over the mountains this afternoon thanks to the combination of a cold upper trough over the region and daytime heating. Scattered showers will drift from the SE to NW through early this evening and generally are more intense for areas near and south of I-90.  We'll see a mixed bag of cloud cover Tuesday night as showers wind down with a better chance of partial clearing west of the Cascade crest. Low-level easterly flow will lead to more cloud cover and a continued chance of light snow along the east slopes of the Cascades overnight.  We'll also see E-SE ridgeline winds tick up a notch into the moderate range for most areas.

On Wednesday, we'll see a similar setup with a cold unstable air mass overhead and showers increasing in the afternoon. An upper-level feature extending from the upper trough offshore should help provide additional lift and lead to increased shower activity near the Mt Hood area in the morning and for the south Washington Cascades in the afternoon. With the increased offshore flow and easterly winds leading to downslope warming, look for the mildest temperatures and freezing levels west of the Cascade crest from I-90 to the Canadian border. Cloudier and cooler conditions will continue along the east slopes of the Cascades. More intense showers may contain graupel.

On Thursday, a developing low pressure system will ramp up the offshore flow and E-SE wind during the day, with ridgeline winds becoming strong by Thursday afternoon. Warm frontal precipitation will approach the Washington and Oregon coast in the morning and may reach the Mt Hood area and south Washington Cascades with steadier light snow by the afternoon. Light upslope snows along the east slopes of the Cascades will likely increase during the day as well on Thursday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Warm frontal moisture will spread inland Thursday night, with the trailing occluded front passing through sometime on Friday.  Forecast models are not in agreement on the track of the low pressure.  Look for strong E-SE winds Thursday night into Friday morning with an eventual switch to westerly. Most forecast models also indicate some warming, most pronounced south of Snoqualmie Pass with this storm.  Post-frontal showers in westerly flow will likely follow on Saturday.

Previous forecast from Mar 7, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
