A low spinning southward off the Oregon coast is well-defined in Satellite imagery. Most of the snow has ended across our region by Thursday afternoon, but some areas of very light snowfall linger near the coast and over the Olympic Mountains. Winds have been driven by the cold, dense air trying to force its way westward across the Cascades. These winds are strongest at low levels. Clockwise rotation around the spinning low has also driven crest-level winds. Both of these forcing mechanisms should gradually decrease Thursday night and Friday as the low drifts southward and light to moderate winds should be mostly light by Friday.
The departing low will also allow skies to clear in most areas, but upslope E flow should allow low clouds to linger longest along the east slopes of the Cascades where some very light snow may continue into Thursday evening. Clear skies and lighter winds will produce temperatures that may be a few degrees colder than Wednesday night although wind chills will not be quite as severe. These temperatures are dangerously cold.
After a very chilly start on Friday, temperatures begin to moderate into the 10s and 20s by the afternoon as light NNW flow develops aloft. A few high clouds should move into the region. High clouds continue to increase Friday night into Saturday morning with a frontal system approaching from the NW spreading thickening clouds from NW to SE by the afternoon. Temperatures on Saturday should rise into the upper 20s for many mountain locations as milder air moves in on increasing SW winds.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A cold front moves through the area Saturday night into early Sunday with a period of moderate to strong SSW winds. Moderate snow starts in NW Washington Saturday evening and spreads throughout the region overnight. Light to moderate snow showers continue on SW to W flow on Sunday as temperatures drop. Another front embedded within the trough likely moves into the region on Monday. Temperatures remain 5-10F below seasonal norms throughout the extended forecast.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
