A front passing through our region this afternoon will usher in a wetter and more active pattern through the weekend and likely into at least the middle of next week. The front will pass through the central Cascades near or after 4 pm with showery post-frontal conditions this evening. The heaviest snowfall is likely to be in the Olympics, Mt Baker area, and the Mt Loop area where 8-14" of snow may accumulate. All areas will see at least a few inches of snow. Strong S-SE winds will become strong W-SW winds later this afternoon and continue Friday night for most areas.
Snow levels will dip slightly into the 3000-3500' Friday night but we won't see a significant cool-down following this storm. That's because on the heels of the frontal passage, another system will lift warm frontal moisture up from the south late tonight through Saturday morning. Even as this wave of moisture exits, an upper level disturbance will begin to spread light rain/snow over the Mt Hood area and the south Washington Cascades Saturday afternoon. While conditions for the central and north Cascades should be relatively drier with the potential for cloud bases to lift (improving visibility), skies will remain cloudy. This feature will lift NE Saturday night, spreading light precipitation and dropping a few inches of snow above 2000-3000' near and east of the Cascade crest.
On Sunday, a cool upper level trough will move inland and bring showers with additional snow accumulations largely for the west slopes of the Cascades. While not cold by anyone's standards, snow levels will drop another 500-1000' by Sunday afternoon vs earlier in the weekend.

Extended Weather Synopsis
We may see a bit of reprieve Sunday night before light warm frontal moisture begins to impact the central/north Cascades and Olympics on Monday. The main moisture plume will be aimed into south-central British Columbia through Monday night. The frontal boundary will likely sag south on Tuesday bringing more significant and widespread precipitation to our area.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
