A relatively quiet, cloudy weather pattern continues in the short term with a continued moderating temperature trend.
An upper low in the Gulf of Alaska continues to push weak systems over the top of a weakened west coast ridge. A warm front loosely linked to a developing offshore low will brush the Olympics and northern Cascades Tuesday night into very early Wednesday before lifting north of the border and shifting winds more SWerly as the day progresses. This should bring around an inch of snow to Mt. Baker with a trace of snow expected for Hurricane Ridge, the Mountain Loop, and Washington Pass. The front stalls just north of the Canadian Border on Wednesday as the ridge rebounds over the region. Expect more clouds than sun for most of the region with better chances for sunshine south of Mt. Rainier and in the afternoon.
The offshore low marches toward the nearshore waters Wednesday night and Thursday. Expect partially clearing skies with clouds filling back in on Thursday, but precipitation should hold off during the day.
Most areas from the central Washington Cascades southward can expect temperatures to rise above freezing in the early afternoon. Inversion may form in some areas Wednesday night but should break down on Thursday for daytime temperatures in the 30s and perhaps the 40s at 5000 ft south of Mt. Rainier.

Extended Weather Synopsis
An active weather pattern returns to the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures cool as a front approaches Thursday night. The low should track toward Vancouver Island with a front moving through the Cascades by mid-day on Friday and will be accompanied by a period of moderate to strong SSW ridgeline winds for the Olympics and Mt. Baker as snow levels drop to 3000-4000 ft in most areas. Snow showers continue on WSW flow Friday afternoon and overnight with a weak ridge over the area. Shower activity decreases on Saturday as precipitation organizes around an open low moving into the nearshore waters. We'll have to monitor the potential for light upslope flow on the east slopes of the Cascades.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
