Weather Synopsis

An approaching short-wave system is knocking on our door this afternoon and has already spread clouds and stronger winds across much of the region. While you may see a few isolated sprinkles near Mt Baker or Wa Pass before sunset, most of the precipitation will hold off until the evening or overnight hours. Look for rain and snow to spread from north to south as the storm steadily slides down along the spine of the Cascades. You'll see three very noticeable trends as the storm approaches and passes.

1. Strong and gusty W-NW winds will develop in many locations. For some of our more wind-prone sites like Mission Ridge, Crystal Mt, and Mt Hood you may experience very strong winds as the main precipitation bands approach.

2. Temperatures will sharply cool. While many locations may start this event as rain, it should quickly turn to snow. That includes Stevens and White Passes. At Snoqualmie expect more of a rain-snow mix as the snow level fluctuates near or just above pass level.

3. Light to moderate rain and snow will focus near and west of the crest. A very pronounced rain shadow will cause precipitation totals to decrease significantly the further east you travel.

By Friday morning, the bulk of the storm will focus on the southern WA Cascades and Mt Hood. Northerly flow aloft will start to usher in drier air behind the front. This should quickly bring an end to lingering showers with the region drying from north to south. Low-level moisture could keep the west slopes a bit drippy, but up in the mountains, you may see a few sun breaks especially in the Olympics and North Cascades.

We should see a brief pause in the action Friday night. However, a strengthening arctic front will pass over the area Saturday and bring us a chance of snow primarily from near I90 southward. Since this storm will approach from the NNE, it doesn't have much moisture but very cold temperatures will result in even a little precipitation turning into several inches of low-density snow.

Extended Weather Synopsis

BRRRRR! is probably the best way to sum up the extended forecast period. Snow showers may linger Saturday night as the arctic front pushes further south into Oregon and California. In its wake, NNE winds will flood the region with very cold and dry air from interior Canada. This should result in mostly clear skies, chilly temperatures, and light winds.

Previous forecast from Jan 26, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
