Weather Synopsis

The high-pressure ridge parked in the eastern Pacific will keep us dry for one more day ahead of an approaching storm. On Thursday expect mild temperatures, strengthening winds, and increasing clouds. Just how much sunshine you see will likely depend on how far south you are in the forecast region. Areas near and south of I-90 will have the best chance of blue skies, while locations further north should start the day with significantly more clouds. Either way, look for clouds to increase, thicken, and lower. The bigger story today could be the winds. We're already seeing many stations showing moderate winds with much stronger gusts. This pattern will continue as wind speeds strengthen ahead of our next storm tonight.

While you could encounter a few stray sprinkles near the Canadian border late this afternoon, in general, precipitation should hold off until overnight. A short-wave system will slide down the backside of the high-pressure ridge and spread light to moderate rain and snow from north to south across the mountains. More importantly, as precipitation arrives, so too does much colder air. So, while some locations may start as rain, cooling temperatures should quickly cause it to change to snow. The one exception could be Snoqualmie where snow levels will fluctuate right at or just above pass level. Due to the orientation of this storm and poor forcing dynamics, there should be a very pronounced rain shadow effect with precipitation totals decreasing significantly the further you travel east of the crest.

Precipitation will linger into Friday morning. As the system continues down into Oregon, it will finally take aim at Mt Hood, Mt Adams, and Mt St Helens. Further north, look for showers to taper and winds speeds to decrease from north to south. By the afternoon, drier air will start to move in behind the storm and you could even see a few sun breaks in the North Cascades and Olympics.

Previous forecast from Jan 25, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
