Our rollercoaster storm pattern continues through the short term. On the heels of a strong frontal system that passed through Monday, we'll see a new round of warm frontal precipitation spread over the area tonight, beginning in the south and working its way north well before daybreak. Heavier precipitation will be found on both sides of the Cascades with a more southerly component, with the heaviest precipitation likely for the south Washington Cascades and Mt Hood area. Southerly winds will also ramp up overnight, becoming strong in many areas. Low level winds will switch back to easterly in the Passes. This should allow Stevens Pass to go back to snow, while Snoqualmie and White Passes will have another chance for freezing rain through early Tuesday afternoon. That said, any ice accretion will be much lighter than what we saw a few days ago.
An occluded front will pass through early Tuesday morning maintaining stormy conditions. As the low passes inland on Tuesday, a trailing upper level feature will bring a burst of extreme W-SW winds to the southern half of the forecast area. Some areas will experience these extreme winds Tuesday afternoon, while some will wait until Tuesday evening. Generally near and south of Hwy 2 will see the strongest winds, with Mt Hood taking the cake. 100 mph gusts should not be an issue for Mt Hood Tuesday afternoon/night. A slight warming trend will accompany the switch to westerly winds Tuesday afternoon.
Strong to extreme winds will continue for the same areas Tuesday night with steady showers along the west slopes of the Cascades/Mt Hood along with a slow cooling trend that should bring snow levels down to 2500-3000 ft by early Wednesday morning. There's some uncertainty about how long these heavier showers stick around on Wednesday before we enter a very brief dry spell.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A quick-moving upper level ridge will slide over the area Wednesday night along with a short period of dry weather. The ridge will give way to a weak frontal system on Thursday. A more significant system, although nowhere as wild as the weather over the last week, should impact the area on Friday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
