It's a stormy Christmas Eve out there in the mountains. Depending on the location, you could find rain, sleet, freezing rain, or snow. Not exactly the presents we were all hoping for. As we head into the evening, precipitation should start to taper and become more showery. The battle between incoming warm air and entrenched cold temperatures east of the Cascades continues. A shift to westerly flow behind the front will favor the warm air mass and help scour out cold pockets in the East Central zone. A loss of easterly flow and warmer temperatures at the Passes should lead to a switch from freezing rain to all rain sometime overnight. When exactly this change will occur is very hard to say, but it appears to be in the wee hours of the morning. For locations further east, freezing rain may continue where cold air stays trapped in the valley bottoms. The last refuge for the frigid temperatures will be the Methow region. However, even that appears to be overwhelmed by the strong westerly winds and warm temperatures, leading to rain or freezing rain by Christmas morning.
A transient ridge will pass over the region very early Sunday and provide a brief break in the precipitation, just in time to help Santa and his reindeer visit good little skiers and riders. You may even see a few holes in the clouds on Christmas morning. However, any reprieve will be short-lived. A warm front will lift northward over the region mid-day and bring with it another round of precipitation. This time, with warm air in place over most of our region, we should see a mainly rain event. Look for precipitation and winds to increase in the late afternoon and evening hours as a trailing cold front starts to approach the Northwest.
The weather models are struggling with the storm Sunday night into Monday, so confidence is quite low. However, slightly cooler temperatures should bring rain and high-elevation snow to the mountains with the heaviest precipitation focusing on the volcanoes.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The high level of uncertainty continues into the extended forecast period. Each weather model seems to have a different opinion of what will occur early next week. However, the common themes are an active pattern will bring several rounds of precipitation. Right now, the most significant storm system appears to arrive Tuesday into Wednesday as lowering snow levels bring fresh snow to the mountains. We'll have to wait and see how this system shakes out as it draws closer.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
