Weather Synopsis

A frontal system is currently pushing from the NW to SE across the Washington Cascades this afternoon and losing steam as the precipitation shield slides southward. This system started off on the mild side with rain at many trailhead locations and should end later Friday evening with a few inches of wet snow as snow levels cool.  We won't see much of a break between weather systems as the next one begins to spread light warm frontal precipitation into the north and central-west Cascades during the day tomorrow. Sun breaks and scattered clouds are most likely to be found further east of the Cascade crest and south of White Pass on Saturday.  A strong frontal system with strong westerly flow will slam into the region Saturday night. Expect increasing precipitation from north to south Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning along with increasing strong westerly winds. While this will mostly be a snow event for mid-elevations, snow levels are likely to creep above Snoqualmie Pass level (3000') for a portion of Saturday night mixing in or turning to rain at Pass level. The Mt Baker area and above 4000' in the Mt Loop area are in line for up to a foot of snow with relatively lower amounts elsewhere expected Saturday night.

A sharp front drops southward early Sunday morning and behind it snow levels and temperatures will plummet.  With cool NW flow and a deep cold upper trough setting up over the PNW on Sunday...this will be a good snow producing pattern.  Additional snowfall during the day on Sunday should range in the 6-12" range for the Cascades Passes/Mt. Hood/West Slopes and 3-6" along the east slopes. Moderate to strong west winds will continue on Sunday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

That snow keeps on coming in cool NW flow aloft Sunday night, especially the Mt Hood area.  Most models are hinting we'll begin to dry out on Monday but that's not entirely clear at this point.  However, even colder air will filter into the region sending snow levels down to near sea level.  Another Pacific storm is likely to deliver a nice helping of snow on Tuesday and/or Wednesday in this cooler and active pattern.

Previous forecast from Nov 24, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
