Weather Synopsis

As of Tuesday afternoon, our latest atmospheric river has spread light to moderate precipitation over the west slopes of the Cascades and Olympics. Earlier today, the precipitation axis shifted a bit further south (nicking Mt Hood) and was a bit heavier than forecast.  Strong westerly flow is causing strong downsloping/drying along the east slopes of the Cascades and producing strong/extreme alpine winds in the Cascades.

The warm frontal precipitation will shift north overnight, with the heaviest precipitation slotted for the north and central Washington Cascades. Locally cooler snow levels in the Mt Baker area on Tuesday will rise quickly this evening as warm frontal moisture pushes north. Snow/freezing levels will peak in the 9,000-13,000 ft range Tuesday night through Wednesday morning over the region.

The moderate precipitation with the frontal band will hang up near the Canadian border, once again afflicting the northwest Cascades, but with relatively dry and mild conditions further south along with a mix of sun and clouds.

What's left of the frontal boundary will shift south Wednesday night into Thursday morning.  A slow cooling trend will ensue, with light new snowfall accumulations possible for the north and the central Cascades. Snow levels will slowly fall Thursday as the showers peter out.

Extended Weather Synopsis

We'll be inbetween weather systems on Friday with drier weather and the jet stream pointed into southern B.C.  An unusually strong N-S temperature gradient across the forecast area will produce relatively cool freezing levels over much of Washington with a rapid jump as you near the Oregon state line on Friday.

Forecast models show a wet pattern from the weekend onward but are wildly out of sync for timing and for gauging specifc snow levels. We'll be keeping an eye on the storm track as we into the weekend to see just how much snow is headed our way over the next 7-10 days.

Previous forecast from Nov 29, 2021

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
