Drying northerly flow predominates Thursday night with a high building in from the west displacing a trough over the Pacific Northwest Interior. Scattered light rain and snow showers on Thursday should dissipate as the sun goes down Thursday evening. Light low-level westerly flow should maintain low clouds banked against the west slopes of the Cascades. Temperatures should drop into the mid-20s for most locations.
The ridge flattens slightly as it expands on Friday, turning flow aloft NWerly. The pressure gradient across the Cascades increases, resulting in increased light to moderate W winds through the mountain gaps, on the east slopes of the Cascades, and at Mt. Hood. The winds will thicken the clouds banked against the west slopes of the Cascade Crest, keeping temperatures cooler below this 5000-6000 ft cloud deck. Further east, the sun's energy and down-sloping winds should warm the atmosphere.
The flattening ridge continues to expand into the region Friday night and Saturday resulting in milder temperatures. However, an approaching frontal system from the north will bring increasing high and mid-level clouds across northern Washington State in the afternoon, limiting warming. Further south, Freezing levels could rise to 8000-10000 ft on Saturday in the Mt. Hood and Cascades East South regions.

Extended Weather Synopsis
We return to active weather as a sharp cold front moving in on NW flow will bring light rain and snow to the Olympics and Mt. Baker areas in the early morning hours on Sunday. Precipitation increases significantly as the strong cold front rotates into the near-shore waters, delivering increasing moderate to heavy rain and snow along with lowering snow levels to the mountains of Washington State. The heavy rain and snow changes to mostly snow Sunday night as the frontal system moves across the region with strong W winds. Decreasing post-frontal rain/snow showers and possible convergence linger through the day on Monday for the west slopes of the Cascades. Freezing levels on Monday should be well below Snoqualmie Pass level and seasonal norms.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
