A shortwave trough dropping toward the region on NW flow pushes Tuesday's ridge further offshore. The shortwave feature increases clouds across the region Tuesday evening with light rain and snow spreading from NW to SE across the mountains of Washington State overnight. Snow levels will be below all major Cascade Passes, but we only expect up to 2" to fall overnight.
As a cold front approaches the region, rain and snow increase significantly on Wednesday morning. The cold front brings the band of heavy precipitation south and east during the day. Behind the front, precipitation becomes more showery, but accumulating snows continue. A convergence band may also feature some locally heavier snowfall rates across the mountains of northern King County during the afternoon. Snow levels rise to around 3000 ft along the west slopes of the Cascades and slightly higher with downslope warming along the east slopes. Ridgeline winds peak in the moderate range for much of the day Thursday, but strong winds can be expected at Mt. Hood and high elevation locations well east of the Cascade Crest.
The trough digs into the east of the Cascades Wednesday night. Post-frontal rain and snow showers and convergence continue with the most significant snowfall accumulations from the central Washington Cascades south to Mt. Hood.
Rain and snow showers ease Thursday morning with slight chances of lingering very light precipitation in the afternoon.
Temperatures remain near or slightly below seasonal norms throughout the forecast period.

Extended Weather Synopsis
As a trough exits the region, the ridge of high-pressure offshore gains influence Thursday night and dries the region out under northerly flow aloft. High pressure moves further into the region on Friday and Friday night. The ridge maintains a strong influence on Saturday, however high clouds might move into the northern portions of the forecast region out ahead of the next system sliding down the backside of the offshore ridge. Freezing levels rise throughout the extended outlook with a freezing levels rising to near or above Cascade crest level by Saturday afternoon.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
