The Pacific Northwest has entered another cool and snowy pattern. A closed low with ample cold air aloft produced heavy snowfall over the Olympic Mountains Thursday night and Friday. The low shifts onshore Friday night as an open trough. Moderate to heavy snow showers continue over the Olympics, but should increasingly shift into the Cascades. S and SW winds continue to favor the Washington Cascades volcanoes where we expect up to a foot of snowfall. Moderate W winds follow the trough as it slides east of the Cascades on Saturday. The pattern favors mountain-enhanced snowfall along the west slopes of the Cascades from the mountain loop south to Mt. Hood. These areas can expect 4-10" of snow above 3500 ft on Saturday with lighter amounts for the north Cascades and the east slopes. Within the post-frontal convective showery regime, a Puget Sound Convergence Zone (PSCZ) develops in the vicinity of Snoqualmie and Stevens passes Saturday afternoon with locally intense snowfall. The PSCZ fizzles Saturday evening as cold air filtering into the region may bring a dusting of snow even to the Cascade foothills. As the postfrontal moisture eases, snowfall begins ahead of another frontal system dropping arriving with increasing snowfall on Sunday. The mountains of western Washington can expect an additional 1-3" of snow with the approaching warm front.
The spring-like westerly flow pattern keeps clouds piled up along the west slopes of the Cascades both Saturday and Sunday while the east slopes may see more frequent sun breaks with downslope winds boosting high temperatures.

Extended Weather Synopsis
NW flow keeps the extended forecast snowy. A strong cold front associated with Sunday's warm front arrives Sunday night. The warm sector arrives with moderate SW and slight warming, but the major passes should stay all snow. Temperatures drop behind the front and moderate to strong W winds behind the front keep heavy snowfall going into early Monday. Light snow showers and possible convergence activity continue for the west slopes of the Cascades on Monday as upper-level flow turns NWerly. Cool maintains clouds and light snow flurry activity for the west slopes of the Cascades Monday night and Tuesday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
