The story of the day remains the cold temperatures. Nearly all of our trailheads continue to struggle to even reach the low 20s. A few isolated snow showers dot the mountains, but accumulations in these areas seem negligible. Expect another night of downright frigid weather. Even with only light to moderate ridgetop winds, you could experience wind chill values well below 0F. Areas north of I90 should see some clearing overnight as a flattening high-pressure ridge pushes over the Cascades.
The notable exceptions will be areas around Mt Hood, Mt Adams, and Mt St Helens. A low-pressure system will begin to approach Oregon's coast. As it does so, it lifts a band of clouds and precipitation from south to north. Light snow showers should develop near the Columbia River overnight. As showers spread northward, most of the snow stalls around I90 Thursday, leaving areas further north much drier. This storm won't bring much moisture, but you may find these modest water amounts produce more snow than normal. Off-shore flow will develop along with this approaching low-pressure system and locations near the Cascade Crest and mountain Passes should see strong easterly winds by Thursday afternoon.
Most trailheads get a break in the weather Thursday night as a weak high-pressure ridge attempts to build into the region. This break looks short-lived as a second, more developed, storm system quickly approaches the Pacific Northwest. Expect increasing clouds across the forecast area Friday with some of the southern locations seeing snow before the end of the day. With very cold air firmly in place, we could recieve snowfall even at very low elevations.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The long-range forecast consists of two rather well-developed storms. The first, arriving Friday afternoon will spread snow from south to north across the region. While the bulk of the precipitation seems focussed on the southern half of the forecast area, all locations should see at least modest snowfall. Shower activity tries to wind down Saturday night and Sunday morning, but our second storm arrives right on the heels of the first. Snow returns to the mountains Sunday afternoon as the cold and snowy weather pattern continues.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
