An elongated upper level trough stretching over most of central Canada continues to keep us in cool NW flow aloft. Stratus or stratocumulus covers much of the Cascades near and north of I-90 with clearer conditions to the south. This trend will continue overnight. A weak system upstream in the NW flow will reach the area tomorrow afternoon. This may cause some light snow flurries for the north and central Cascades. Clearer conditions will once again be found further south.
Strong high pressure over central British Columbia has been slowly driving arctic air south. Fraser valley outflow and offshore flow through the Cascade gaps should increase in earnest Wednesday night and especially Thursday. This will partially be in response to lower pressures from an approaching frontal system. Warm frontal moisture will likely reach Mt Hood Wednesday night and extend northward during the day on Thursday. Forecast models are now in somewhat better alignment that light snow will reach north towards the north Cascades during the daylight hours. Light snow will transition to a more moderate snowfall south of Stevens Pass along both sides of the Cascade crest. Mt Hood should see more modest snow amounts from this system with relatively higher snow levels versus the rest of the forecast area.
Thursday will also mark the day when the coldest air becomes entrenched over Washington State. Locally strong east winds at likely at the Passes and possibly at ridgeline level for the central and south Washington Cascades. Fraser outflow winds from the NE will likely impact terrain near and north of Hwy 542. Wind chills will definitely be below zero in many locations...stay warm!

Extended Weather Synopsis
As the parent upper level trough kicks inland Thursday night, another disturbance will likely keep snowfall going for the same areas through Friday. Another slightly stronger frontal system reaches the area Saturday, slowing down as it reaches the coast. This could bring a light to moderate shot of snow across the region. It's unclear if we'll see much warming on Saturday or if we'll have to wait for additional Pacific systems to arrive before dislodging the modified arctic air mass.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
