Weather Synopsis

A storm impacting British Columbia drops a fizzling cold front SE across our region Tuesday night, bringing a chance of very light snow to the Mt. Baker area, thickening cloud cover, and cooler temperatures for Washington State after midnight and into Wednesday. Generally, light westerly winds should also increase, however moderate winds and potentially strong gusts are expected for exposed high elevation locations along the east slopes of the Cascades Tuesday night. The front stalls over northern Oregon on Wednesday, so Mt. Hood won't experience much cooling. Westerly flow should maintain mostly cloudy skies across the region on Wednesday.

A compact closed low approaches the mouth of the Columbia River Wednesday night into Thursday, adding moisture to the lingering front across Oregon and Southern Washington. This could bring some light rain and snow with the highest amounts currently expected in the Mt. Rainier area (potentially 2-4" of snow). Areas from Stevens Pass to Mt. Hood should expect at least a trace of rain or snow. Given the north-south temperature gradient, areas at the northern end of the band will have significantly lower snow levels. The track of the low remains uncertain and if it tracks further offshore, it may be a non-event, while if it tracks closer to the coast, expect a longer period of precipitation with slightly larger snow totals. The low is expected to continue progressing south of the area by late Thursday and precipitation should diminish over our region.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The compact and vertically stacked closed low drops southward and the associated weak front fizzles by Thursday evening. The setup ushers in colder Candian air east of the Cascade Crest which should moderate somewhat as surface pressure gradients drive the air westward through the mountain gaps with moderate strength. The split upper-level flow means that upper-level flow will be light. Friday should be mostly clear and cool. The northerly flow aloft developing Friday night should reinforce the cold air at the surface. Upper-level flow switches NWerly on Saturday. Seasonably cool air remains in place and high clouds should increase ahead of a stronger system likely to arrive Sunday.

Previous forecast from Jan 19, 2021

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
