Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Monday

The second in a series of shortwave upper level troughs will slide over the area this afternoon and evening in NW flow aloft. This system will be wetter than the first one with precipitation quickly increasing later this afternoon along the west slopes of the Cascades, especially for favored areas like Snoqualmie and Stevens Passes and Paradise on Mt. Rainier. Snow levels will continue rising through the afternoon and evening until leveling off in the early morning hours on Tuesday. W to NW winds at ridgetop level will be strong through tomorrow morning before easing slightly in the afternoon.

Showers will taper down Wednesday with a short break expected between systems. There may be a few late morning/mid-day sunbreaks from Snoqualmie Pass and south on Tuesday, but as the next system approaches from the NW, expect cloud cover to fill back in for all areas in Washington by mid to late afternoon.

The next system to pass through in this progressive pattern will be a better developed frontal system with the low crossing inland into central British Columbia Tuesday night. The frontal band should pass through during the early mornings of Wednesday with steady precipitation changing to showers. Windy conditions will once again develop Tuesday night as well.  A brief period of post-frontal westerly flow should allow for a period of more significant snow showers from Snoqualmie Pass and northward through Wednesday morning, perhaps localized by a Puget Sound Convergence Zone. There should be some drying and clearing on Wednesday afternoon particularly for the Mt. Hood area, the east slopes of the Cascades and the south Washington Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Monday

Wednesday night should be rather quiet as the next Pacific frontal system approaches. This one will feature a well defined cold front that should arrive along the Olympic peninsula and Mt. Baker area Thursday afternoon with increasing clouds for other areas. The front will slowly pass inland Thursday night. The parent Pacific low begins to open and sag south along the coast Thursday night, stalling and weakening the frontal boundary over the area and turning the flow aloft more southerly.  A cool upper level trough should translate to scattered showers on Friday.
