Weather Synopsis for Saturday night through Sunday

A month and a half of relentless weather is finally giving us a breather as a strong high-pressure edges into the region, bring a drying northerly flow.

The gradually dissipating bands of convergence snowfall in the central Cascades and the light to moderate showers in the south Washington Cascades and Hood zones this afternoon should end by early evening. Clouds should linger longest in these same areas with clear skies and good radiational cooling expected throughout the Cascades and Olympics. A weak inversion may bring some valley fog to deeper valley locations.

The offshore ridge, centered about 1000 miles off the coast of Oregon, edges slightly eastward Sunday through Monday keeping that northerly flow pattern over our region and bringing a moderate inversion to the region, which should be strongest at night and during the morning hours when light winds allow temperatures cool at the surface. Temperatures should generally be cool on Monday (slightly below freezing in most mountain locations). By Monday, some models have temperatures near or slightly above freezing in the 5000-7000 ft range, with below-freezing temperatures at lower elevations. The freezing levels do an imperfect job of describing this scenario.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Sunday night through Sunday

Monday night and Tuesday, the ridge flattens slightly as a weak upper-level clipper system moves down the British Columbia coastline. The clipper should arrive late Tuesday and Tuesday night may bring some very light snow to our mountains with snow levels in the 2000-3500 ft range. Models diverge for Wednesday with a chance for very light snow to linger or a weak ridge before the next impactful storm arrives on Thursday.
