Weather Synopsis for Monday & Friday
Active weather continues with a relative reprieve in some areas on Monday.
Post-frontal showers are winding down, mainly along the west slopes north of highway 2 this morning. A frontal passage Sunday night ushered in some slightly cooler air and the Passes are currently near or slightly below freezing with snow levels forecast to stay near or slightly below Snoqualmie Pass level on Monday. The bigger weather story will be a potent frontal system lifting quickly NE today. It's currently around the California-Oregon border and should spread increasing rain and snow to Mt. Hood and then areas of southern and central Washington State in the afternoon.
Greater impacts with this system are expected Monday evening as the triple point (where the warm and cold front meet moves toward the southern Washington Cascades with snow levels rising throughout the Cascades and easterly flow (which develops Monday afternoon) keeping the Passes all snow through the evening hours, with a changeover to rain expected sometime overnight for Snoqualmie Pass. Rain and snow should be moderate to heavy overnight with heavy precipitation expected for Mt. Hood, Paradise, Crystal, Snoqualmie Pass, and Mt. Baker. Winds should be moderate gusting strongly at 5000 ft in many areas with the moderate to strong winds sustaining at Mt. Hood after the cold frontal passage Monday night. On Tuesday, a detached surface low and upper trough moves into the region, sustaining moderate to occasionally heavy rain and snow, particularly from I-90 southward, with snow levels near or slightly above Snoqualmie Pass level and SW winds turning W late in the day.
