Weather Synopsis for Friday & Tuesday

Precipitation is just beginning to reach the mountain areas this morning (6am). Look for snow to become more consistent and increase throughout the day with the highest snowfall rates in the afternoon hours. Even though snow levels are creeping up as the winds turn more southwesterly, this should primarily be a snow event for the forecast area. Several key meteorological factors are aligning today to bring significant snowfall in most locations. Spillover east of the Cascade crest looks good on Friday, so places like Washington Pass, Leavenworth, and Mission Ridge could see a decent shot of snow. Look for generally moderate west winds even at mid and lower elevations.

The low-pressure system responsible for the snowfall Friday will move inland overnight. As it does so, we'll lose some of the forcing mechanism which will decrease snow east of the Cascades. Snow should continue along the west-slopes and passes as strong winds push moisture up onto the mountains and ring out additional snowfall. The pattern will favor areas south of I90 where stronger winds will help produce more precipitation.
