Weather Synopsis for Sunday night through Monday

A shortwave trough rotating up from the south has spread very light precipitation over the Mt. Hood region and the south Washington Cascades early this afternoon. Easterly flow up to crest level has added an upslope component to the precipitation, lowering cloud ceilings and squeezing out light snow along the east slopes of the Cascades as well. Light precipitation will spread to most areas this evening as the precipitation shield expands northward.

Snow levels are cooler than they were just a few days ago but still not cold by late December norms. Colder air will filter in later tonight as a surface low develops in eastern Washington and the winds switch from east to west late Sunday night into Monday.

Light showers should mainly affect the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt. Hood area Sunday night through Monday morning. A weak upper-level ridge will build over the area during the day Monday, but this will likely trap low level moisture for the same areas rather than lead to a full-scale clearing trend. There's a higher chance for sunshine for the Hurricane Ridge area and along the east slopes of the Cascades on Monday afternoon. The drying and clearing trend should continue Monday night. A weak front will approach the coast on Tuesday spreading high clouds inland during the day but otherwise dry and cool conditions are expected.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Monday

The front will split and weaken as it moves inland as the associated upper level trough digs south off the California coast. Forecast models disagree to whether any precipitation will make its way inland Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as the front dissipates. For those looking for fresh snow in the forecast, at best we could have scattered light snow showers over this period.

Strong upper level ridging will build over the Pacific Northwest Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. The upper level pattern combined with strong surface high pressure over the interior of British Columbia and offshore flow will keep us cold and dry.
