Weather Synopsis for Tuesday night through Tuesday

A deep trough has brought a modified arctic air mass over the region keeping temperatures below seasonal norms throughout the forecast period. By Tuesday night, the trough has shifted to the east, leaving the Pacific Northwest in a dry and light northerly flow. Fraser River outflow continues to spill arctic air into the Puget Sound lowlands.  Temperatures will drop to well below freezing throughout the region under clear skies and strong radiational cooling, with light winds. Isolated fog is most likely near lakes and water sources. Temperatures are likely to fall below zero in parts of the Methow Valley.

On Wednesday, the air mass will remain cooler than average but will moderate slightly with calm to light winds and mostly sunny skies. Wednesday night, temperatures will cool quickly under clear skies and with calm to light winds. A light easterly flow will develop through the passes.

On Thursday, light crest-level winds will shift southerly as a cutoff low bypasses our region from north to south, some 500-600 miles of the coast of Oregon. Temperatures will be slightly warmer than Wednesday due to low-level southerly flow. Light easterly flow continues through the passes.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Tuesday night through Tuesday

Thursday night, a reinforcing surge of modified arctic air will move into the British Columbia interior with a leading band of light snowfall reaching the North Cascades around the early morning hours. Meanwhile, the cutoff low dropping toward California may spin some light snow up from the south into the Mt. Hood region.

As the modified arctic air mass reaches the coast on Friday, the associated cyclonic flow is expected to produce a low-pressure center that picks up Pacific moisture and spreads increasing light snowfall across our region (most likely including the Puget Sound lowlands where it may mix with rain). Easterly flow should increase through the passes.

The low very drifts very slowly southward, just off the Washington coastline Friday night and Saturday with moisture wrapping around the low, likely favoring locations east of the Cascade crest with continued light to moderate snow. The reinforcing shot of cold air should trickle its way into the region.
