Weather Synopsis

A cold, dry weather pattern remains in place through the weekend thanks to persistent NNW flow and a very cold air mass over the interior of N. America.

At 5,000 feet, areas west of the Cascade Crest will experience the coldest temperatures on Friday, with daytime highs only reaching the mid to upper 20s. Overnight, colder air will sink deeper into valleys on both sides of the Cascades. A weak push of Fraser outflow winds overnight and early Saturday brings colder air to the Puget Sound lowlands and some locally enhanced NE winds for the mountains northwest of Mt Baker. Light easterly flow also develops through the Cascade gaps, shifting the coldest air east of the Cascade Crest and through the passes. With strong traditional cooling, expect a cold start on Saturday morning. Temperatures will moderate in all areas thanks to widespread sunshine, but more significantly in the Olympics, Mt Hood, and southern Cascade volcanoes as the offshore ridge gains influence.

An upper-level disturbance brings some high clouds and a shift to more westerly ridgeline winds late Saturday through Sunday morning. It will also be accompanied by an increased push of cold Fraser outflow winds, filtering more cold air into the Puget Sound Lowlands. Expect another chilly start on Sunday, but if high clouds are extensive, they may limit radiational cooling somewhat. These clouds should pass, revealing full sunshine from mid-morning onward.

Extended Weather Synopsis

An offshore blocking pattern will keep the Pacific Northwest mostly high and dry. A deep cold air pool east of the Cascades contrasts with much milder air west of the Cascades Sunday night and Monday as the flattening ridge moves over the area. Moderate E flow keeps the passes cold. A weak upper-level disturbance brings some clouds, cooling for the west slopes of the Cascades, and some WNW winds while the ridge rebounds offshore.

Previous forecast from Jan 17, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
