Weather Synopsis

With the biggest storm of the Holiday week behind us, we remain in an active pattern with temperatures slightly above seasonal norms as systems rotate into the area every 12-24 hours around a deep, broad Aleutian Low.

Light to occasional moderate rain and snow shower activity continues on W flow Thursday evening, mostly near and west of the Cascade Crest. The next system approaches southern Washington State with a warm front advancing as it moves from W to E. This system will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rain and snow to the Southern Cascade Volcanoes with precipitation reaching the central Cascades in the early morning hours. Most of the snow accumulations will be above 3000-3500 ft and south of I-90. However, some snowfall will lift as far north as Washington Pass by mid-morning on Friday before the snowfall retreats southward, becoming showery by the afternoon.

Hot on the heels of the Friday morning system, a somewhat stronger low rotates toward Vancouver Island Friday night. Moderate rain and snow move into the Olympics Friday afternoon and reach portions of the Cascades by the end of the day. Expect moderate rain and snow overnight with post-frontal snow showers on Saturday. WSW flow should focus on the heaviest precipitation on the west slopes of the Cascades. Snow levels will fluctuate, but remain mostly in the 3000-3500 ft range.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A low moving toward southern Washington Saturday night and Sunday will be accompanied by a cooler trough. Precipitation should focus on southern parts of the forecast region where it could be moderate to heavy at times. The trough flattens as a ridge forms offshore Sunday night into Monday, spreading lighter shower activity across the west slopes of the Cascades. More shower activity spills over a very weak ridge on Monday. Temperatures should be near seasonal norms with 2500-3000 ft snow levels.

Previous forecast from Dec 26, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
