Weather Synopsis

A strong winter storm continues to bear down on the Pacific Northwest this afternoon. However, given the orientation of the front, some locations could see significant snowfall, while others are left with mainly wind.

The first wave of precipitation is already on our front door. Southerly flow with this round will focus the storm on Mt Baker, Crystal Mt, Mt Rainier, Mt Hood, and Mission Ridge. Other locations along the Cascade Crest and Passes will see much less snowfall. Expect strong and gusty winds to develop in similar locations resulting in a very storm night in the mountains.

Some locations could see a short lull in the storm Saturday morning. However, the trialing cold front should quickly reinvigorate precipitation rates. With this second round of snow, southwesterly winds keep the bulk of the precipitation trained on the west slopes of the Olympics, Cascades, and Passes. In general, snow levels should stay below major winter trailheads. However, Snoqualmie Pass could see a short period of rain as cooling easterly flow turns west in the afternoon and conditions warm slightly. While snow totals don't look overly impressive on Saturday, gusty winds will keep most locations feeling downright stormy.

Post-frontal showers continue Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Even still, the general trend will be for drying and even a chance at some sunshine as a transient high-pressure ridge shifts over the area. The best chance for sunshine will be near and east of the Cascade Crest.

Extended Weather Synopsis

While we start the extended period mostly dry, it shouldn't last long. The first in a trio of disturbances appears to arrive very late Sunday night and into Monday morning. Rounds two and three seem scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Each of these systems looks a little warmer and a little wetter than the last. While, no one of these storms seems particularly impressive, they keep us in an active pattern for the first part of the week.

Previous forecast from Dec 13, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
