The upper level ridge that's been parked over our area since Friday and responsible for our warm and dry weather has started to weaken as we inch towards a pattern change. Temperatures this afternoon are once again well above normal, with widespread mid-mountain temperatures in the 50s. We're in for another night of mild above-freezing temperatures, but overnight temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than last night. Freezing levels have begun their slow descent from 10,000' this morning, to 6500' to 7500' Wednesday afternoon.
A weak upper level disturbance will approach from the SW on Wednesday. This feature will cause an increase in onshore westerly flow. Low level moisture will increase overnight and tomorrow, and we may see some low clouds develop along the western foothills of the Cascades. 5000' temperatures will be a few degrees cooler along the west slopes of the Cascades vs the east slopes of the Cascades due to the onshore flow on Wednesday. We'll also see moderate W-SW ridgeline winds increase tonight and Wednesday as the system approaches. Precipitation will hold off on Wednesday and most areas should see more sun than high clouds in the morning, and transition to a high overcast by the end of the day.
Showers will spread inland Wednesday night and scattered showers will stick around through Thursday. We can expect slightly higher amounts over the Olympics and west slopes of the Cascades, with lighter amounts further east. Snow levels will lower a bit more on Wednesday night/Thursday and bump between 4000-6000' as precipitation returns to the area.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The ridge will rebuild briefly Thursday night before shifting east again on Friday. An upper low complex will spin generally light showers up in southerly flow on Friday. A slightly stronger and wetter upper-level disturbance will drive an increase in showers Saturday. The pattern evolution heading into next week looks potentially active, but the questions asking how much and for how long are still very much up in the air.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
