Weather Synopsis

NWAC will be closed Tuesday, March 12th as we gather and grieve following the death of one our forecasters, Matt Primomo. We will not issue regular avalanche or mountain weather forecasts on Tuesday. We will return to normal operations on Wednesday, March 13th. We appreciate the community's understanding and support during this time.

The third and strongest in a series of progressive frontal systems arrives Monday night. Light to moderate snowfall spread into the the Cascades by the end of the day on Monday. As a well-developed cold front moves through the region during the evening hours, expect moderate to heavy rain and snow, moderate to occasionally strong SSW ridgeline winds, and a brief period of warming. Snow levels peak around 3000-3500 ft in the early evening hours before cooling begins overnight. E flow could keep Snoqualmie Pass proper as wet snow with temperatures hovering around or slightly above freezing. Moderate snow showers continue as winds shift towards the SW or WSW overnight, gradually decreasing in most areas.

Moderate snow showers continue on Tuesday as the deep upper trough brings cooling aloft, creating increased convection by the afternoon, but snow levels lower from 3000 to 2500 ft. A significant convergence band likely forms around Mt Baker early Tuesday and drop southward as the day progresses. It should reach Stevens Pass by the end of the day and likely reaches Snoqualmie Pass during the evening hours.

Snow showers taper Tuesday night as the trough exits to the east and flow aloft shifts to the NNW. Expect minor amounts of trapped low-level moisture to bring a few flurries to parts of the west slopes of the Cascades very early in the day. Skies transition to partly to mostly sunny on Wednesday as a ridge builds and expands offshore.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The ridge of high pressure amplifies and brings warming temperatures aloft. Expect inversions during the morning hours and significantly milder temperatures late Thursday. Expect much more significant warming on Friday as freezing levels rise up to 10000 ft in the afternoon once the low-level inversions mix out.

Previous forecast from Mar 11, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
