Weather Synopsis

An unseasonably cold upper trough spawned two circulation centers today; one in the vicinity of the San Juans that combined with some low-level convergence has been directing steady showers into the northwest and central-west Cascades. The broader circulation is spinning counter-clockwise south of Grays Harbor with bands of snow showers extending to Mt Hood and the south Washington Cascades on both sides of the crest. Lighter and more scattered snow showers with sunbreaks can be found in other areas.

As the upper trough digs southeast Tuesday night, we'll see a drying trend with a turn to drier northerly flow aloft.  Showers should quickly taper down for the Cascades of Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties and linger a bit longer into the evening for the south Washington Cascades and Mt. Hood.  The general drying and clearing trend will help mid-mountain low temperatures bottom out into the teens and even some single digits overnight.

On Wednesday, we'll see some passing high clouds and filtered sunshine for the Washington Cascades in the morning.  A warm front around Vancouver Island will begin to increase low-level clouds along the west slopes of the Cascades, Olympics and Mt Hood in the afternoon.  A few flurries are possible later in the day, especially for the Mt Loop Hwy and north to the Canadian border.  All areas will see generally light westerly ridgeline winds ramp up quickly in the afternoon hours as the front approaches.

The front will sag south Wednesday night with light snow overspreading the area, heaviest in the Mt Baker area, and increasing ridgeline winds. Storm conditions will ramp up quickly Thursday morning with increased snow and winds. On Thursday morning before the frontal passage we'll see a slight bump in snow levels but we don't need to worry about rain at your favorite mountain Pass or ski area base in this cold pattern. We'll quickly transition on mid-Thursday to post-frontal snow showers in blustery westerly flow. Early March will feel much like the last few weeks of February.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Snow will continue to pile up Thursday night, especially along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood. Cool temperatures and snow showers will stick around on Friday but trend lighter during the daylight hours. There's a fair bit of uncertainty just how much snow the next system approaching from the NW will end up producing on Saturday.

Previous forecast from Feb 27, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
