Weather Synopsis

An approaching frontal system has spread mid-level clouds through much of NW Washington on Saturday afternoon. These clouds should lower and thicken as the surface low slides down the British Columbia coastline and the front continues to pivot toward the PNW coast.

Snow spreads from NW to SE overnight, increasing in intensity. With dry air across the region, we're expecting a slight delay in the precipitation as the atmosphere saturates. Temperatures should quickly drop as the precipitation moves in. Snow levels start around 1000 ft in most areas. Increasing SSW winds don't have much warm air to tap into following the very deep trough that extended throughout the western US. SSW winds ramp up in advance of the front into the moderate to locally strong range. Mt. Baker will be favored for precipitation totals with heavy snowfall and winds potentially exceeding forecast numbers in the vicinity of the ski area. Light E winds should allow for some spillover onto the E slopes, but amounts should remain generally light.

Post-frontal westerlies increase behind the front on Sunday and peak during the mid-day hours. Moderate snow showers in the morning decrease during the afternoon. Models indicate the potential for convergence enhancement Sunday into Sunday evening, with potential formation around Stevens Pass or further north. By late in the day, snow levels should be between 0-500 ft. Expect 6-20" of snow by late Sunday for the west slopes of the Cascades with 2-10" for the east slopes of the Cascades. Snow-to-water ratios will be high, particularly behind the front.

Expect another 2-6" of snow for the west slopes of the Cascades as an offshore low digs off the coast of Oregon and spins bands of moisture northward. E winds around the low and at low levels should allow for accumulations along the E slopes of the Cascades. The offshore low drifts toward the mouth of the Columbia River and with light banded snow showers continue to add low density snow across the region.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A cold upper trough keeps the weather unsettled Monday night through Tuesday evening. Expect clearing skies as the trough drops south to California giving our region a temporary break early Wednesday. Prefrontal moisture begins impacting the west slopes of the Cascades with light snowfall late in the day. Temperatures remain 5-15 degrees below seasonal norms.

Previous forecast from Feb 25, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
