Weather Synopsis

While not a major snow produce, a storm is knocking on our door this evening. Expect clouds to thicken and lower ahead on an approaching trough. Rain and snow will start in the Olympics this evening, but for most locations, the main action holds off until after 10 pm. Eventually, precipitation will spread across the mountains with many sites near and west of the crest receiving 3-5 in of snow by tomorrow morning. The exception will be Mt Baker, where overnight totals could be higher. Strong and gusty winds will accompany the main precipitation bands. Places like Mt Baker, Mission Ridge, Crystal Mt, and Mt Hood should experience the highest wind speeds.

Just as the front starts to really move inland tomorrow morning, the associated trough will split sending the bulk of its energy and moisture north and south of our region. This will put a damper on the snow totals and limit the storm's ability to really push further east than the Cascade crest. Instead on Friday, we'll be left with post-frontal showers. The real question mark will be the skies. It looks like there's enough upper-level instability and drying to allow sun breaks to occur particularly in the afternoon with more significant clearing further east.

By Friday night a building high-pressure ridge should bring an end to any lingering showers and finally allow the entire region to dry out. While clouds may continue to hang around in the mountain valleys and passes, this drying pattern will set us up for a really nice Saturday. Most locations should see plenty of sunshine, generally light winds, and mild temperatures to start the weekend.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A high-pressure ridge will help us start the extended forecast period dry. However, an approaching low-pressure system moving south out of Alaska will start to flatten the ridge Saturday night and Sunday. At first, this won't make much of a difference in our weather. However, winds should start to increase Sunday morning as the storm shoves its way further south. Eventually, rain and snow will spread across the Pacific Northwest from the north Sunday afternoon and evening. At the moment this system appears to have a solid moisture tap into the Pacific allowing it to produce decent snow totals and push precipitation east of the mountains. However, we'll need to wait and see how this storm unfolds.

Previous forecast from Feb 9, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
