Weather Synopsis

An active southerly branch of the jetstream and split flow over our region keeps our weather reasonably quiet through Tuesday. A very subtle trough over our area with a weak circulation associated with a fizzled low pressure has instigated a region of generally light precipitation along the PNW coastline as of Monday afternoon. This moisture is expected to bring 1-2" of snow for the west slopes of the Cascades as it moves through during the evening (and perhaps overnight) hours. Most other areas will be partly to mostly cloudy with seasonable temperatures.

A ridge of high-pressure wedges into the region on Tuesday, with the warm air aloft trapping low-level moisture against the Cascades with some weak westerly flow forcing. This could produce increasing clouds and mostly very light snowfall during the afternoon for the west slopes of the Cascades.

A trough digs into our nearshore waters Tuesday night with a warm front spreading increasing moisture into our region, particularly the Olympics and the northern Cascades. The trailing cold front moves through before 10 AM with a brief uptick in snow levels to just below 3000 ft in the central Washington Cascades. Snow shower activity follows the front, but should be relatively light except in convergence. The system has become less impressive with successive weather model runs, so at this point, we expect 24-hour snow totals in the 8-12" range for Mt. Baker and Paradise, with only 2-5" for the major passes.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The upper trough remains over the region with cooler temperatures, scattered snow showers, and weak convergence Wednesday night. Showers tail off Thursday morning with drying northerly flow over the region by the afternoon. A ridge should keep mostly clear/sunny conditions over the region Thursday night and Friday. Temperatures should be near seasonal norms.

Previous forecast from Jan 16, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
