Weather Synopsis

It's a stormy afternoon in the mountains as a relatively mild frontal system continues to impact the Pacific Northwest. So far, the heaviest precipitation has occurred in the North Cascades, with Mt Baker already (as of 2pm) receiving around 2.25 inches of water. While temperatures with this storm have been on the warm side, cold air east of the Cascade Crest and cool easterly flow through the mountain gaps has allowed the Passes and East Side locations to see mostly snow. As the front moves through the area early this evening, look for Pass level winds to shift westerly and with it a transition to a wintery mix or rain. Overnight, the focus of the precipitation will shift to the Central Cascades as up-slope showers and a Puget Sound Convergence Zone continue to ring out additional moisture. The exact location of the heaviest rain and snow overnight is hard to pinpoint, but weather models this afternoon are trending more toward the highway 2 corridor.

By Wednesday morning, only a few isolated showers may linger along the west slopes of the Cascades. A building high-pressure ridge will allow the mountains to dry out and for the skies to begin to clear. While you may see low-level clouds persist in the mountain gaps, this should allow for a generally dry and cool day across the mountains.

The ridge axis will start to move inland Wednesday night into Thursday. As it does so warmer air will start to push into the region from the SW. This will be most evident in the Olympics and near the Cascade volcanoes where temperatures should warm significantly. Cold air entrenched east of the mountains will once again set up temperature inversions in the mountain valleys and passes. This could result in some patchy fog in some locations. Expect multiple freezing levels near and east of the Cascade Crest, where trailheads could be quite a bit chillier than higher up the slopes.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A fast-moving frontal system should arrive in the Northwest on Friday. Warm temperatures will likely cause the initial precipitation to fall as rain, or possibly freezing rain, across the mountains. A cold front swinging through Friday afternoon will help send snowlevels crashing back to near Pass elevations. While this storm doesn't appear particularly strong, it could bring close to an inch of precipitation to some locations. Drier weather should return Saturday as a transient high-pressure ridge passes over the area.

Previous forecast from Nov 21, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
