Weather Synopsis

The first bands of precipitation associated with a warm front have started to arrive at the coast this afternoon. Light to moderate rain and snow will continue to spread inland eventually reaching all parts of our forecast area this evening. Just as the front arrives in the region, it stalls. This should allow for moisture to continue to spin into the mountains and maintain light to occasionally moderate precipitation for areas near and west of the Cascade crest. Exactly where this front stalls will have a big influence on how much rain and snow we receive. Weather models continue to disagree about the specifics. However, it appears the heaviest precipitation will occur late Sunday night and Monday morning.

By the afternoon a growing high-pressure ridge in the eastern Pacific shoves the stalled warm from northward and pushes much warmer air into the region. While all areas will see a rise in snow levels throughout the day, locations near the Olympics, Mt Hood, and West South zone will feel the effects the most. Many trailheads may start the day as snow, but will likely end as rain. This includes the passes, where we expect snow to change to rain by early afternoon.

As the ridge continues to grow, warmer and slightly drier air will pour into the area. This should help bring an end to most of the major shower activity. However, low-level moisture may still ring out a few sprinkles and create drippy conditions through Tuesday morning. While low clouds might continue to hang around the mountains, skies at mid and upper elevations should start to clear. Snow levels should peak for most locations Tuesday just as precipitation ends.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The position of the Pacific high-pressure will drive our weather through the extended forecast. By late Tuesday afternoon and evening, the ridge axis starts to shift inland. As it does so, our atmospheric flow will turn more southwesterly and draw clouds into our area. This steers the tail end of a weakening storm over the Northwest Wednesday afternoon and evening. Even though snow levels drop significantly, the storm will only provide modest amounts of precipitation. As the ridge fully exits to the east Wednesday night, we're left with a more spring-like pattern for Thursday with plenty of sunshine and warming temperatures.

Previous forecast from Mar 20, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
