Clouds have already increased this afternoon ahead of our next frontal system. Overnight, expect cloudy and windy conditions for most locations. Precipitation should start to arrive in the mountains mainly after midnight. As the cold front draws closer southerly winds will increase, especially for more wind-prone sites like Hurricane Ridge, Mt Baker, and Mt Hood. The bulk of the precipitation should arrive near or just before sunrise, with plenty of moisture making its way over the Cascade Crest to mountains further east. Initially, the Passes may see rain or a rain-snow mix. However, as the cold front passes overhead, colder air should quickly stream into the area and cause snow levels to drop in the afternoon. This will return snow to most, if not all, of our mountain trailheads. Post frontal showers and a Puget Sound Convergence Zone will maintain snow for the west slopes of the Cascades and Passes as we head into Saturday night. If you happen to be under one of these features, snow may be moderate to heavy at times.
By Sunday morning, we find ourselves between storms. While a few showers may continue to bring another inch or two of snow to the mountains, most locations will start the day drier. That changes as a weak warm front sweeps into the area Sunday afternoon. Light precipitation and warming temperatures will gradually spread across the Pacific Northwest. Even though temperatures rise slightly, most mountain locations will continue to see snow.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The parent low-pressure responsible for Sunday's warm front remains parked in the Gulf of Alaska Sunday night and Monday spinning additional waves of moisture into our region. While none of these weak disturbances appear to bring much in the way of precipitation, it should be enough to maintain showers in the mountains through Monday night. The big story in the long-range forecast will be warming temperatures. A high-pressure ridge starts to grow over the eastern Pacific Monday and shoves its way northward. As it does so noticeably warmer air will slide into the Northwest and send our freezing levels on a steady march upward as we head into the middle of the week.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
