A moisture-starved upper-level disturbance dropping the Canadian Coast Range increases cloud cover across the region in the early evening hours. A quick-moving, but discontinuous band of light snow should spread first in the Olympics, then the central and northern Washington Cascades overnight, with light snowfall primarily in the Mt. Hood region on Friday. Most other locations should pick up a trace to 2" of snow, but upslope NW flow could potentially squeeze out slightly higher amounts for the northern Olympic mountains. Snow levels should remain at or near sea level. Winds were essentially calm Wednesday afternoon. NW winds increase, becoming light to moderate and peaking in the early morning hours. Low-level flow should shift back easterly and skies mostly clear from north to south during the day on Thursday as freezing levels rise to 1000-2000 ft.
Thursday night and Friday morning should be chilly under clear skies with light winds and strong radiational cooling as the offshore high pressure moves onshore. Friday starts cold, but temperatures should rebound in the afternoon, particularly west of the Cascade Crest where freezing levels rise to 3000-4000 ft. Increasing E winds on Friday should keep the east slopes and passes cooler.

Extended Weather Synopsis
High clouds increase Friday evening, then lower and thicken as a frontal system approaches the region. Light rain and snow reach the Olympics by mid-morning, then intensify during the afternoon as the light precipitation reaches the Cascades. Rain and snow continue Saturday night and Sunday with lighter precipitation generally across southern parts of the forecast region and moderate precipitation further north as the frontal system sends the majority of the moisture north into Canada. Temperatures moderate significantly Saturday evening west of the Cascade Crest (snow levels rising to 3500 ft), but cold air banked against the east slopes should maintain snow and cold temperatures in the passes.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
