Weather Synopsis

A long-duration and intense winter storm will impact the Pacific Northwest through Friday. The culprit will be a low tracking toward Heida Gwaii with a very strong warm front that has already spread heavy snowfall into the Oregon and southern Washington Cascades.

The board precipitation shield should lift northward with the slow-moving warm front Wednesday night, bringing increasing heavy to very heavy snowfall to most of the region. The most intense snowfall should focus on southwest Washington, however, warming will occur more rapidly for Mt. Hood, the southern Cascades Volcanoes, and the Olympics. This should limit snow accumulations at lower elevations. Easterly flow peaks in the moderate range Wednesday night, keeping the passes quite cold.

The front stalls over Washington State on Thursday morning. A secondary low forms to the SW of the original maintaining heavy precipitation and even increasing WSW winds on Thursday afternoon. Things could get very messy in the central Cascades Passes. Stevens Pass could see a period of mixed precipitation and potentially rain just west of the Pass. Snoqualmie should experience snowfall that transitions to mixed precipitation as warm air over-runs colder air funneling through the gaps on an E gradient. There will be quite a battle between these opposing wind directions that could result in several changes in precipitation type during the event.

As the new low heads toward the mouth of the Columbia River by Friday morning, SW winds peak over the mountains of Washington State Friday evening as heavy rain and snow continues across the region. Snow levels should generally be above Snoqualmie Pass level with rain now expected at the Pass.

The low and a cold front cross the Cascades on Friday, bringing a shift to WNW flow, cooling temperatures west of the Cascade Crest, and more showery or convergence style precipitation by the afternoon.

This storm will be a very major snow producer, notably for locations east of the Cascade Crest where temperatures stay colder where many locations down to low elevations could see two feet of snow.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Light snow showers gradually decrease under WNW as temperatures drop to below seasonal norms Friday night and Saturday. Very light snow shower activity could continue Saturday night as an offshore ridge builds into the region. The ridge should bring dry and sunny weather on Sunday with milder temperatures.

Previous forecast from Jan 5, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
