Temperatures remain unusually cold and very slowly moderating over the next several days as NNW flow continues to bring weak and moisture-starved systems to our region. These systems continue to produce low-density snow with minimal water content. The first system to impact our region will be a trough sliding down the east slopes of the mountains from interior British Columbia. After some very light snowfall in the northern parts of Washington Friday evening, it may tap into just enough moisture from the ocean to create some 2-6" accumulations from around Snoqualmie Pass south to Mt. Hood. With light to moderate east flow in place at low-levels, expect the east slopes of the Cascades to be slightly favored.
Expect clouds to clear from north to south across Washington State on Wednesday while some light snow lingers in the Mt. Hood area through the morning hours.
A somewhat stronger trough slides down the British Columbia coastline Wednesday evening, spreading increasing light to moderate snowfall to northwest Washington State.
That snowfall should increase on Thursday, increasingly focusing on areas from highway 20 southward. Many areas can expect 6-12" of snow Wednesday night through Thursday, with locally higher amounts possible in the central Washington Cascades. Southern parts of the forecast region can also expect moderate to strong ridgeline winds.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Post frontal snow decreases and ends from north to south on Thursday night as the trough shifts eastward, but not before parts of the Washington Cascades pick up an additional 2-6" and Mt. Hood picks up around 5-10". Light snow should continue in the Mt. Hood area through late Friday, while other areas experience partial clearing. A ridge building offshore combined with a weak warm front brings in some milder air at upper levels, but with deeply entrenched cold air across the regions, most mountain locations will be slow to warm. Light snowfall commences early Saturday and continues throughout the day.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
