Sunday night and Monday might have been the coldest 24-hour period in the last several years in the Pacific Northwest, but the next few days will only moderate slightly. Conditions remain dangerously cold, so bundle up! Fraser river outflow continues to bring cold air into the lowlands.
Our NNW flow pattern continues with a weak system moving parallel to our coastline in the near-shore waters. It glances our region with some light snowfall to the western parts of the Olympics Monday evening. Snow should be most impactful for Mt. Hood, where we expect 2-4" of low-density snow overnight and another 1-3" on Tuesday as the low moves south of the region. The exact storm track will determine how much snow Mt. Hood gets and whether snow reaches into the southern Washington Cascades. Most of Washington State should experience partial cloud cover and light winds. With the low off our coast, E flow will increase, sloshing the coldest air against the east slopes of the Cascades and filtering it through the mountain gaps.
Another shortwave moving southward from interior British Columbia may spawn some light snowfall for southern parts of our forecast region Tuesday night. At this time we're expecting several more inches for Mt. Hood, but it is possible this snowfall and widespread than we currently forecast.
Wednesday features fair weather with partly cloudy skies and should be very slightly warmer than Tuesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The December pattern of storm systems dropping down the coast toward our region from the Gulf of Alaska continues - and so does the cold temperatures. The first significant storm to impact our region approaches Wednesday evening. Although the upper-level support with this system may be over central BC, it should spawn a low right along the coast that picks up sufficient moisture to bring a healthy round of snowfall. The moisture arrives from NW to SE in the early morning hours on Thursday. SW winds and snowfall should peak in the moderate range Thursday morning. This system does bring significant warming at cloud level relative to the temperatures we've experienced. Thus, the mountain snow should be low-density, but not quite as fluffy as in recent storms. With cold temperatures in place, we expect snow down to sea level to start the storm, but we might get a mix with rain or freezing rain in the lowlands. Winds shift northerly behind the trough, cutting off post-frontal snow showers from north to south Thursday night and allowing Fraser outflow to intensify once again, bringing more cold air to the lowlands. We expect fair weather and cold temperatures in most areas on Friday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
