The long awaited pattern shift to cooler and snowier weather is almost here. On Tuesday afternoon, it's a drippy, mostly cloudy day across the forecast area with mountain temperatures generally above freezing at low and mid elevations. A Pacific frontal system dropping SE will move light precipitation into the region in Tuesday evening and heavier precipitation inland after midnight. Snow levels will be slow to lower initially Tuesday night but once the cold front passes through the Cascades around mid-morning Wednesday we can expect snow levels and temperatures to drop rapidly during the day. Behind the front, westerly ridgeline winds will become strong to extreme for much of Wednesday. A Puget Sound Convergence zone, as well as upslope flow along the west slopes of Cascades, will keep snow showers in the forecast with the highest snowfall accumulations for the western Cascades and Passes from roughly Skagit County down towards the south end of King County.
A secondary upper level feature will reinvigorate snow showers late Wednesday night through Thursday with even lower snow levels. The axis of the heavier showers will also shift southward from the central Cascades to Mt. Hood. As the flow aloft becomes more northwesterly and the broad upper trough moves inland, westerly winds will decrease through Thursday. This will be a nice pattern for snow over the next 48 hrs, with 6-18 in. along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood and lower amounts for the east slopes of the Cascades especially further east from the Cascade crest.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Our active pattern will continue through the weekend with a strong Pacific frontal system lined up for Saturday. Don't expect many breaks in the action as light warm frontal precipitation will spread over the mountains on Friday. Snow levels will stay cool, but slowly rise Friday and further Friday night as heavier precipitation moves into the area. It's a bit too far out to nail down specific snow levels, but it does seem like there will be a sliver of warm air ahead of the cold front passage on Saturday, that will push snow levels up to mid-elevations in many areas, especially south of Snoqualmie Pass.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
