An open trough slowly slides down the Alaskan Panhandle on Thursday night. A weakening subtle frontal feature rotating around the open trough brushes our region with a very light rain or snow from Snoqualmie Pass northward. Don't expect more than a dusting of snow or some light drizzle. Temperatures cool overnight. WSW winds will be light out of the WSW in many areas, but the leeward side of the Cascades and Mt. Hood should get into the moderate range.
A chance of very light rain or snow showers lingers into the morning hours on Friday for the west slopes of the Washington Cascades. Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies banked up against the west slopes of the Cascades with clearer skies further east. Temperatures should be cooler than Thursday with 3000-6000 ft snow levels.
The open trough continues to slide down the British Columbia coastline Friday night and Saturday. SW winds out ahead of it will transport milder air. Warming temperatures on Saturday may be muted somewhat by increasing cloud cover day on Saturday. Light rain and snow should arrive in northern Washington by the afternoon with snow levels around 4500 ft. Areas above these elevations in the Mt. Baker area might see an inch or two of snow by the end of the day with southerly ridgeline winds increasing into the moderate range.

Extended Weather Synopsis
An open trough with a subtle circulation center continues to slide down the British Columbia coastline Saturday night. Light to moderate rain and snow focuses on the Mt. Baker area, but spreads throughout the west slopes of the Washington Cascades. Cooling temperatures with the trough should bring a changeover from rain to snow at the Mt. Baker base. Light showers decrease across the west slopes of the Cascades on Saturday with the trough sliding into the region. The trough moves into Oregon by Monday morning. A shift to NE flow behind the trough should dry the region out. A short-lived and subtle ridge should bring a dry day on Monday with a cold start and mild afternoon temperatures.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
